Neighbours Axed By Channel 5 - Where You Can Go To Support The Show

Neighbours fans have decided to not go quietly into the night, launching a petition to save the long running Aussie soap following announcement of it’s cancellation.

In a move which affects generations of avid fans, the series was axed, and it’s legions of supporters are up in arms. One user definitely has taken the news well.

Someone known as Edward Skylover, has started a Change.org petition that aims to gather support for the show, how has he done? As of now, and reported on Metro, the petition has already gathered 10,000 signatures in an attempt to make the networks stand up and take notice of the passion that fans have for it. Here are a few comments as reported on Metro.co.uk in regard to the feelings of the disgruntled supporters:

Neighbours has been a staple on UK screens for over 35 years – and has been watched by generations,’

‘It now faces the axe due to reports that Channel 5 are struggling to come to a deal with Fremantle Media. Neighbours is more than just a TV show – it is a source of comfort and entertainment for generations of fans who have watched it for decades.

‘It is one of the most loved TV shows in the UK and brings lots of viewers from all backgrounds to Channel 5’s catalogue of channels. Even Adele is a fan. Channel 5 – we plead with you – please find a way to keep Neighbours on air.’

A Breeding Ground For Aussie Exports And Escapist Happiness For The UK

Whilst the fan support shows just how UK viewers feel about the show, it is also popular as an export vehicle for up and coming Aussie actors…some of whom you’ll love and recognise, others who have been pop icons for periods. Can you name them? Here are a selection:

However, a spokesperson for Channel 5 told Metro.co.uk that plans are, at this point, unchanged, saying:

Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer…It’s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series…We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years…We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers,’

Can people power overturn this decision? Head over to Change.org if you would like to keep some friendly neighbours in your life!
